Measurement of pH and salinity

Determine the Salinity Directly in Soils and Substrates.

Activity Meter PNT 3000 with case

For determining the salt content directly in the soil or substrate

The Activity Meter PNT 3000 (Plant Nutrient Tester) determines the salinity of the soil or substrate, taking into account the respective soil properties, such as soil moisture, temperature and soil density.

The salt content is determined by the concentration of dissolved solids (salts). In aqueous solutions, the dissolved salts are free and mobile and can be measured by conductivity. In the soil or substrate, this mobility of salts depends on

  • soil moisture
  • soil density
  • Soil temperature

These factors determine the level of salts that are "active" and can be ingested by the plants. Since the plant nutrients, such as nitrate, potassium, etc., are in the soil and substrate as salt, can be concluded with the measurement of the "active" salts on the availability of nutrients. The plants can only absorb and utilize the active salts, ie the salts dissolved under the given conditions.

The measuring principle of the activity measurement was developed in the 70's by Prof. Dr. med. Walter Tepe, director of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition at the Geisheim University of Applied Sciences. Since then, it has been used to quickly control the nutrient supply of plants.

The PNT 3000 represents the last stage in the development of activity meters. Electronic manufacturing is based - as with all 3000 Series devices - on advanced SMD technology, which is considered more reliable and temperature resistant than conventional wire technology. The housing is splash-proof and robust. The ease of use is unsurpassed - the measurement is performed with a single press of the button. Recalibration is not required.

The probes for direct measurement are made of stainless steel and are available in three different lengths. Special maintenance of the equipment or probes is not required.

The evaluation of the measured values takes place by comparison with the optimal values for the respective plants. An extensive table with optimal values and an easy-to-understand operating manual are included.

Possible areas of application of the PNT 3000 for rapid control of salinity / nutrient availability by direct measurement in the soil:

Determine the EC value directly in aqueous solutions.

COMBI 5000 EC - Conductivity measurement

Conductivity EC Measurement in Solutions

The electrical conductivity of a solution is its ability to carry (or conduct) electrical current. The unit of conductivity is Siemens / cm or Milli-Siemens (mS). In horticulture, the unit mS is also referred to as "EC" (electric conductivity). In aqueous solutions, there is a direct relationship between the concentration of dissolved salts and the conductivity; the higher the salinity, the higher the conductivity.

For plant nutrition, the measurement of conductivity is of enormous importance, eg

  • For all culture methods, the correct fertilizer / process water ratio should be checked before each liquid fertilization. The manufacturers of liquid fertilizers and nutrient salts provide the respective concentration-dependent EC values of the various fertilizers. The nutrient solution is checked after the output of the fertilizer mixer.
  • In addition, an occasional check of the process water, especially in the production of salt-sensitive plants, is highly recommended.
  • In closed systems, the EC measurement of the nutrient solution is essential. This measurement is usually done with fixed EC probes controlling the fertilizer computer. It is recommended to check the installed measuring electrodes from time to time.
  • All "nondeless" hydroponic culture methods require constant control of the EC value due to the lack of buffering of the substrate.
  • Review of soil / substrate suspensions. Soils or substrates are mixed in a defined ratio with water and the salts completely dissolved. The conductivity, measured in the suspension, can be converted to the salt content in mg / l substrate.

The EC measuring device COMBI 5000 EC meets all requirements for a reliable, high-quality measuring device. The sensor technology with platinum-coated electrodes is absolutely maintenance-free and fast-response. The high measuring range up to 200 mS also allows the control of highly concentrated stock solutions.

The temperature is automatically compensated. The device is factory-calibrated and usually requires no readjustment. Two control standards with 111.8 mS and 1.4 mS are available.

Determine the pH directly in soils / substrates and liquids.

pH meter pH 3000 with case

Direct measurement pH value

Addition to the salt content, the pH value is the most important parameter in plant nutrition. The absorption of nutrients by the plants is highly dependent on the pH value:

  • Too low pH values block the absorption of nutrients from main nutrients such as phosphorus and potassium
  • Too high pH values prevent the absorption of trace elements, eg. Eg iron (iron chlorosis!)

For this reason, fast, easy and accurate pH measurements in production horticulture are essential. The pH 3000 fulfills all the requirements for a pH meter for use in soil analysis in an ideal way. It is specially designed for the needs of on-site measurement in horticulture. The housing of the basic unit is robust, insensitive to temperature and offers optimum protection against moisture and humidity. The newly developed puncture pH electrode with a special membrane as sensor withstands even the enormous demands of direct measurement. Three ceramic diaphragms guarantee a short response time, prevent a rapid clogging of the diaphragms and ensure a long-term use of the electrode.

Of course, the pH 3000 can not only be used for direct measurement in the soil or substrate:
the measurement of water and fertilizer solutions is also possible. Calibration of the pH 3000 happens automatically after immersing the electrode in the buffer solution. Two LEDs signal the current buffer solution. The device with integrated stability indicator "automatically" recognizes the end of the respective calibration. The calibration will not be released until the electrode generates a stable signal.

The "pH / mV" switchover function allows a simple and accurate check of the electrode state. A "low-bat" indicator warns when measuring with low battery performance. The delivery takes place in a sturdy aluminum case for transport and proper storage of the device.

pH measurement

PH is one of the most important parameters in plant nutrition. The absorption of nutrients by the plants is highly dependent on the pH value. With the COMBI 5000 and the measuring electrode specially developed for soil analysis, the pH value can be measured directly in the soil.

EC measurement

The electrical conductivity (EC) of an aqueous solution directly depends on the concentration of dissolved salts: the higher the salt content, the higher the conductivity. For plant nutrition, the EC measurement of the process water and the nutrient solution, especially in closed and hydroponic culture methods, is required.

  • Measuring range: 0 - 200 mS
  • Resolution: 0.001 - 0.01 mS
  • Accuracy: ± 2% of reading
  • Calibration: possible at 0.084 / 1.41 / 5.0 / 12.88 / 111.8 mS / cm
  • Electrode: EC plastic electrode with platinum sensors (automatic temperature compensation)
  • Electrode length: 125 mm
  • Areas of application: Conductivity measurement in aqueous solutions

Multi-probe: activity, humidity, temperature measurement

The newly developed multi-probe allows simultaneous measurement of activity (salinity), humidity (volumetric) and temperature. The activity determines the salinity directly in the soil or substrate, taking into account the respective soil properties, such as soil moisture, temperature and density. These factors determine the dissolved salts that are "active" and can be absorbed by the plants under the given conditions.

The soil moisture is determined volumetrically according to the FDR measuring principle. As a result, the influence of pH and salinity of the soil or substrate can be neglected.

The temperature is measured in the range of -10 ° C to + 50 ° C by a fast-reacting, spattered in the probe tip NTC sensor.

Multi-Probe:

  • Probe: PVC, Ø 10 mm
  • Probe length: 250 mm
  • Sensors: FDR capacitive (humidity), NTC (temperature), bi-pol (salinity)
